FAQs

Is North Sikkim open year-round? When should I go?
North Sikkim is generally open year-round except during heavy monsoon (mid-June to mid-September), when landslides and road closures are common. We advise against travelling then. The best two windows are April–June — mild weather, rhododendrons in bloom, Yumthang at its most magical — and September–November — crystal-clear skies, the best mountain views of the year. Winter (December–February) is cold and beautiful but some high-altitude roads may close. We’ll always advise you on current conditions when you enquire.
North Sikkim requires a special Inner Line Permit (ILP), which is different from the regular Sikkim entry permit. It must be arranged through a registered local tour operator — which is exactly what we are. We handle the entire process for you. You just need to submit your Voter ID / Passport / Driving Licence (Aadhaar is NOT accepted), 4 passport-sized photos, and basic details. We need these a few days before your travel date. For children below 18, carry their Aadhaar or birth certificate.
Altitude sickness (AMS) is genuinely possible on this trip, especially at Gurudongmar (17,800 ft) and Zero Point (15,300 ft). Symptoms are headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. To prevent it: don’t rush, drink lots of water, skip alcohol the night before, and listen to your body. Our drivers and guides are experienced with altitude situations. We recommend consulting your doctor about Diamox (altitude medication) before the trip. Anyone with serious heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions should get a medical clearance before booking North Sikkim.
Gurudongmar Lake sits at 17,800 feet and is sacred to three faiths — Buddhists (it’s named after Guru Padmasambhava, who blessed the lake in the 8th century while travelling to Tibet), Sikhs (who revere it as a holy site), and Hindus. The most famous story about the lake is that one small portion never freezes — even in the dead of winter when everything else around it is completely iced over. Scientists haven’t found a conclusive explanation. The locals have always called it a miracle. Standing there yourself, you’ll understand why the question barely matters.
Absolutely yes. Spring (March–May) is the most dramatic with rhododendrons everywhere, but Yumthang is beautiful year-round. Summer brings lush green meadows and a full, fast-flowing river. Autumn gives you golden foliage and clear skies. Even in winter, a snow-covered Yumthang has a quiet, ethereal beauty. It’s a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve and every season shows you a different side of it. Spring gets all the press, but we’ve had travellers fall completely in love with every version.
With some adjustments, yes. Yumthang Valley at 11,800 feet is accessible for most people and perfectly fine for senior travellers with reasonable fitness. For Gurudongmar at 17,800 feet and Zero Point at 15,300 feet, we recommend that elderly travellers or those with health concerns skip those specific excursions and enjoy Lachen and Lachung instead — which are equally beautiful in their own right. Kids generally handle altitude well but watch for signs of discomfort. We can always customise the itinerary — just tell us your requirements when you enquire and we’ll design the trip around your family.
